Pastor David Jang, the Gospel Grace That Overcomes Evil with Good

Reflecting on the humility and love for enemies found in Romans 12:16–21 as illuminated through Pastor David Jang’s sermon, this meditation calmly considers the grace of the gospel that lays down retaliation and overcomes evil with good, opening the path toward reconciliation. It invites us to think again about faithful obedience and peace that begin in a lowly place and are lived out in today’s relationships.

In Victor Hugo’s Les Misérables, one soul is broken more deeply before the warm hand of mercy than before the cold door of punishment. What changes a person is usually not a display of power, but an event of love that humbles itself and embraces another. Pastor David Jang’s sermon leads us to meditate on where the Christian life begins and where it must move forward, following Romans 12:16–21. Humility is not a decorative posture of modesty; it is the first place that the gospel establishes within us so that we may overcome evil with good.

The flow of this passage is clear. The exhortations to live in harmony with one another, not to set our minds on high things, and not to be wise in our own eyes show what form love must take within the community. Pastor David Jang, founder of Olivet University in the United States, does not read this passage merely as etiquette for human relationships, but as a path of faith in which we humble ourselves before God and seek to understand our neighbors. Lowliness is not defeat; it is the place of grace that keeps us from being swept into the methods of evil.

Romans 12 does not speak of an ideal that is possible only when emotions are calm. It asks about the direction of faith precisely in those places where there is misunderstanding, hurt, and the rising desire to repay someone. For this reason, the sermon becomes more than a simple moral lesson; it becomes a mirror that long reflects the inner life of believers. Before asking whom we are able to love, we must first ask before whom we are trying to exalt ourselves.

The Grace of the Gospel That Begins in a Lowly Place

The command to “live in harmony with one another” is not a shallow demand that everyone hold the same opinion. It speaks of the direction of the heart that can suffer together and rejoice together. If the church community is to grow as a community of love, what must come first is not the habit of judging someone from above, but the movement of standing beside that person where they are. Humility is not the erasure of oneself; it is the obedience of faith that receives another person’s circumstances into one’s own field of vision.

One point the sermon explores deeply is the relationship between love and knowledge. To know someone does not mean merely possessing a great deal of information about that person. It means standing beneath their pain, feeling their burden together, and, when necessary, actually reaching out a hand. Understanding, then, is not cold analysis; it is an act of lowering oneself in love.

Through the image contained in the word “understand,” the sermon reminds us that understanding is connected to the posture of standing beneath. To know another person, we must not pull them up onto the platform of our own standards; rather, we must go down near to where they are. This is the practical depth of the command to associate with the lowly. Love is not a distant gaze that interprets; it is a heart that draws near and endures together.

Paul’s attitude in the Epistle to Philemon, standing between Onesimus and Philemon, also belongs within this flow. Paul did not put his authority forward and command, but appealed in love and opened the way of reconciliation. When someone with great authority pleads from a lowly place, the gospel is revealed not as the language of command, but as the language of restoration. The way relationships within the church are built must ultimately pass through this lowliness.

When We Know Through Love, Wisdom Finds Its Way

The command not to be wise in our own eyes quietly pierces the inner life of the believer. People easily call their own judgment wisdom and their own emotions justice. Yet Pastor David Jang’s biblical meditation says that true wisdom comes not from quick conclusions of the mind, but from discernment born of love. As Proverbs teaches, there are times when one must not answer a fool according to his folly, and there are times when one must answer in order to awaken him from that folly.

These two attitudes may seem contradictory, but within love they become one path. What matters is not whether I win, but how God’s goodness is revealed within that relationship. Knowledge without love may be able to explain a person, but it cannot give life. By contrast, wisdom held by love discerns when to speak and when to be silent, when to draw near and when to wait.

In this sense, the wisdom of the sermon has the texture of life rather than that of abstract doctrinal explanation. Small attitudes become the actual face of wisdom: delaying a word, slowing the speed of judgment, and praying for the other person.

Therefore, the wisdom of the gospel is not proven by victory in argument. It is revealed through the direction of one’s life. A person who has been lowered sees more, and a person who loves knows more deeply. Theological insight becomes clearer not when one looks down from a high place, but when one lowers one’s knees near someone’s wound.

This wisdom is tested first within the church. The community is not a place where perfected people gather; it is a place where people who need grace face one another’s weaknesses. Love, therefore, is not a state in which good feelings last for a long time, but obedience that seeks God’s will first even in uncomfortable relationships. Faith changes the temperature of words and the direction of actions in that very place.

When We Lay Down Retaliation, the Peace of Faith Comes

The latter part of Romans 12 pushes the place of humility toward the place of loving one’s enemies. The command, “Do not repay anyone evil for evil,” is not merely an ethic of suppressing emotion. It is a gospel command that prevents evil from reproducing itself within us. Retaliation may briefly appear to be justice, but in that moment we easily borrow the language of evil and come to resemble it.

The passage tells us to take thought for what is honorable in the sight of all. Goodness is not a kind feeling that flows out accidentally; it is obedience that is planned and chosen in faith. Entrusting vengeance to God is not powerless resignation, but the restraint of faith that refuses to seize the seat of the Judge for oneself. When we believe that God rules justly, we are freed from the false certainty that we can find peace only by bringing the other person down.

The scene in which David had the opportunity to harm Saul but did not take up the sword is presented as an important example of this faith. David did not misunderstand the opportunity before him as permission for revenge. His confession that judgment belongs to God stopped his hand. The peace that comes from such faith is different from the peace produced by the world’s balance of power.

The sermon distinguishes between the peace the world speaks of and the peace the Lord gives. Peace maintained by force may seem to stop conflict for a time, but it does not change hostility in the heart. Yet the peace that comes from love and service is not a silence gained by crushing the other person; it is a stillness that breaks the flow of evil and opens the possibility of a new relationship. That peace may look weak, like the way of the cross, but it changes people in the deepest place.

The Hopeful Obedience That Overcomes Evil with Good

The command, “If your enemy is hungry, feed him; if he is thirsty, give him something to drink,” runs against human instinct. Yet the gospel reveals its power precisely in the place where it flows against that instinct. Love that cares for an enemy is not tolerance that pretends not to see evil. It is the most active resistance that prevents evil from continuing through me into another evil.

At this point, love is not an attitude that treats the other person’s wrongdoing lightly. The logic of the sermon is, in fact, stricter. In order not to repay evil with evil, we must bring our anger and fear honestly before God, and there choose goodness again. Love for enemies is therefore not the beautification of emotion, but a deep training in ruling oneself by faith.

The gospel emphasized by Pastor David Jang becomes clear here. To be overcome by evil is not merely to be defeated outwardly; it is to allow hatred and retaliation to destroy the love within us. Conversely, to overcome evil with good is to allow God’s love to govern our response. Along that path are forgiveness and reconciliation, and at times tears of repentance and small acts of obedience that begin again.

The saying about heaping burning coals on someone’s head should also be understood in this context. Good actions can awaken the other person’s conscience and lead them to turn back; and if they are ultimately rejected, such actions reveal evil before God’s justice. In either case, the place of final judgment is not in our hands. Our part is not to participate in the methods of evil, but to show the reality of the gospel through love and goodness.

This path is neither quick nor easy. Believers stumble and rise again, discovering that the heart which resolved not to hate can waver once more. Yet repentance is not despair that makes failure the end; it is a channel of grace that turns us back toward God. One act of restraint, one act of forgiveness, one warm gesture can become a seed of reconciliation in places unseen.

Ultimately, the hope this sermon leaves behind is not a large and splendid victory. It is the quiet power of a life that begins with lowliness, discerns through love, entrusts judgment to God, and overcomes evil with good. The gospel tells us to overcome, but the way of that overcoming is humility, love, and goodness. What sword remains in our hands today that we have not yet laid down? And who is the person whom we must once again feed and give drink to before the Lord?

Dr. David Jang has proclaimed the gospel in various regions of the world through field missions and digital media ministry, and as the fruit of that ministry, many people devoted to the Great Commission have been raised up. Based on this missionary vision, Olivet first began as a small church school for missionary training. Later, in order to provide more systematic theological education and cultivate missionary leaders, Olivet Theological College and Seminary was established in Los Angeles and Seoul in 2000.

As the school grew, Dr. Jang officially founded Olivet University in San Francisco in 2004. In the diverse and dynamic environment of San Francisco, Olivet expanded its educational fields beyond theology to include music, journalism, art and design, and technology. The university also strengthened its educational capacity by recruiting faculty members, including Dr. William Wagner, and in 2005 moved to the former UC Berkeley Downtown Extension campus, further solidifying its foundation as a university.

In 2006, Dr. Jang transferred the presidency to Dr. David James Randolph in order to focus more fully on missionary work, while continuing to lead global missions as International President. Olivet University later received institutional accreditation in 2009, added a language education college and a business college, and continued to grow as a Christian educational institution for world missions by expanding its degree programs and international partnerships.
