Pastor David Jang, The Debt of Love and the Garment of the Gospel

Following Pastor David Jang’s sermon, this reflection meditates on how Romans 13 illuminates authority and conscience, the debt of love and the fulfillment of the law, awakened faith, and the life of putting on Christ. It calmly considers the path of grace and obedience, the church’s responsibility in the world, and the hope given to us in our present place.

A single shaft of light cutting through Caravaggio’s dark canvas suddenly makes the night, to which human eyes have grown accustomed, feel unfamiliar. That light does not merely beautify objects; rather, it reveals hidden faces and bent hearts. The message of Romans 13, as held forth in Pastor David Jang’s sermon, resembles this very light. It asks how the church should stand before the state and governing authorities, what kind of debt of love believers should bear before their neighbors, and how they should put on Jesus Christ in a world like deep night.

This sermon does not reduce Romans 13 to a simple command of submission. Instead, it pays attention to the way Paul’s exhortation at the end of Romans 12—“overcome evil with good”—continues into the themes of order and authority, taxes and honor, love and wakefulness in chapter 13. Christians are citizens of the kingdom of God and, at the same time, citizens living within the world. This dual position does not separate faith from reality; rather, it leads believers to pass through the very heart of reality with conscience and love.

Therefore, the theological insight of this passage goes deeper than political slogans or moral instruction. The gospel reveals itself in one’s attitude toward authority, in honesty regarding taxes, in small responsibilities toward neighbors, and in the daily habits of those who look toward the end. Biblical meditation does not remain merely as quiet words on a desk. It becomes an existential question: What kind of garment am I wearing today as I stand before the world?

Grace Before Authority Is Not Servile

The confession in Romans 13 that authority comes from God does not mean that worldly power should be deified. The sermon’s flow is delicate precisely at this point. The fact that God has permitted order is not the same as saying that every authority faithfully represents God’s will. Thus, faith is neither unconditional submission nor violent rebellion driven by anger.

Pastor David Jang interprets that when the church relates to state power, it must first preserve the purity of faith while living according to conscience within law and order. To tolerate injustice or cooperate with evil is not fitting for the gospel. Yet to oppose evil by adopting the ways of the world—hatred, violence, and falsehood—is also not the way of the gospel. Grace does not make a person weak. Rather, grace is the deep strength that enables one to lay down the desire for revenge and choose what is good within the sovereignty of God.

The Christian’s social responsibility can also be seen anew from this point. Paying taxes, respecting public order, and not harming the lives of neighbors are not peripheral matters of faith. As Jesus said, “Render to Caesar the things that are Caesar’s,” they are ways in which those who belong to God live responsibly in the world. The church must not be assimilated into the world, but neither does it become holy by hating the world. Holiness is not a white garment that escapes reality; it is an awakened conscience that seeks not to be defiled within reality.

At this point, Paul’s paradox becomes even deeper. The path of imprisonment and transfer, which may have appeared unjust in human eyes, could become, within God’s sovereignty, the route through which the gospel moved toward the center of Rome. Through such scenes, this sermon teaches that the church must not waver between fear and hostility. Those who trust God neither absolutize worldly power nor fight by imitating the evil of worldly power.

The Debt of Love Is the Heaviest Lightness Left by the Gospel

The “debt of love” in Romans 13:8 is not the language of idealized emotion. It is the way redeemed people understand themselves. The grace we have received was given freely, but that freeness is never light. The ethics of the gospel is a love that continues to repay precisely because it can never fully repay; a heart that reaches out again to one’s neighbor because it can never say, “I have paid it all.”

This sermon sees the fulfillment of the law in love. The commandments, “Do not commit adultery,” “Do not murder,” “Do not steal,” and “Do not covet,” ultimately gather into the single command to love one’s neighbor as oneself. Love is not abstract goodwill. It is concrete restraint that does no evil to one’s neighbor, and practical obedience that seeks to protect another person’s life and dignity. Love expressed only in words may easily appear beautiful, but love that does not bear suffering soon becomes an empty shell.

Here, biblical meditation descends into the smallest places of daily life. Not taking legal obligations lightly, not covering shortcuts and greed with the name of faith, and opening one’s hand toward the weak neighbors of society—all these actions become ways of remembering the debt of love. Faith does not remain only as inner conviction. Faith is tested for its truthfulness before the face of one’s neighbor.

Love also changes the language of a community. When obligation is felt only as compulsion, people try to do only the minimum. But those who remember the debt of love think beyond their own share and consider the good of their neighbors. The agape spoken of in the sermon is not affection centered on the self, but a sacrificial direction that extends goodness even toward those who persecute. Therefore, love does not abolish the law; it fulfills it. If law upholds external order, love breathes the warmth of life into that order.

Awakened Faith Takes Off the Garments of Night

Paul says, “The hour has come for you to wake from sleep.” This sentence is not an apocalyptic slogan meant to stir fear, but a theological insight that enables us to see our present life anew. Believers who have already received salvation but still await the day of completion cannot spend today carelessly. To say that the night is far gone and the day is near means that we must see the darkness of the world clearly, and at the same time, we must not grow accustomed to that darkness.

The sermon does not see revelry and drunkenness, sexual immorality and sensuality, quarreling and jealousy merely as scenes from ancient Roman society. They are the language of night that occupies the human heart in every age. If the church falls asleep together with that night, it loses its light no matter how right its words may be. Therefore, repentance is not merely the emotion of regretting wrongdoing. It is a change of direction in which one casts off the works of darkness and begins to walk properly as in the daytime.

The expression “the armor of light” is beautiful, but it is not light or decorative. Armor is not an ornament; it presupposes battle. The Christian life is not a tranquility that escapes outside the world, but a tension that preserves conscience, truth, and love in the very midst of the world. The sign of wakefulness is not piety performed for others to see, but a life open before the Lord even in places where no one is watching.

This wakefulness is not anxiety that calculates the end times, but hope that enables one to live each day honestly. The belief that the day of completion is near does not make reality insignificant. Rather, it gives greater weight and clarity to every word spoken today and every choice made today. Those who look toward the light to come lose the reason to compromise with the darkness of the present.

The Place of Hope Where We Put On Christ

Romans 13 concludes with the words, “Put on the Lord Jesus Christ.” The place at which this sermon finally arrives—after passing through authority and conscience, love and the law, the end and holiness—is precisely here. To put on Christ is not to wear religious language on one’s body. It is the path of sanctification in which His righteousness covers us and our actual lives are renewed according to that righteousness.

The depth of the gospel that Pastor David Jang emphasizes through Romans 13 is found here. Before state power, before the needs of neighbors, and before the approaching light of day, the church cannot become righteous by its own methods. Only when it puts on Christ does love become joyful obedience beyond mere duty, and repentance become not self-hatred but a return toward hope. The ethics of the kingdom of God is not a distant ideal. It begins today between the old garment one person must take off and the new garment that person must put on.

This garment does not hide us from the world so that we become invisible. Rather, it reveals to whom we belong. It is a life revealed through conscience before authority, love before neighbors, repentance before sin, and hope before the future. Therefore, the phrase “put on Jesus Christ” does not end as a sentence about private piety. It is a public confession about what face the church will show in the world, by what manner it will overcome evil, and through what love it will bear witness to itself.

In the end, the flow of this word quietly brings us to a halt. Am I trapped before authority in either fear or anger? While speaking of the debt of love, have I lost the restraint that refuses to do evil to the neighbor closest to me? While confessing that the day is near, am I still comfortably wearing the garments of night? Even today, the gospel requires not loud words but a deeply transformed way of being clothed. Before the question of whether what we wear is Christ or the old habits of desire, faith awakens once again.

Dr. David Jang has proclaimed the gospel in various regions of the world through field missions and digital media ministry, and as the fruit of that ministry, many people devoted to the Great Commission have been raised up. Based on this missionary vision, Olivet first began as a small church school for missionary training. Later, in order to provide more systematic theological education and cultivate missionary leaders, Olivet Theological College and Seminary was established in Los Angeles and Seoul in 2000.

As the school grew, Dr. Jang officially founded Olivet University in San Francisco in 2004. In the diverse and dynamic environment of San Francisco, Olivet expanded its educational fields beyond theology to include music, journalism, art and design, and technology. The university also strengthened its educational capacity by recruiting faculty members, including Dr. William Wagner, and in 2005 moved to the former UC Berkeley Downtown Extension campus, further solidifying its foundation as a university.

In 2006, Dr. Jang transferred the presidency to Dr. David James Randolph in order to focus more fully on missionary work, while continuing to lead global missions as International President. Olivet University later received institutional accreditation in 2009, added a language education college and a business college, and continued to grow as a Christian educational institution for world missions by expanding its degree programs and international partnerships.
