Pastor David Jang, Luke 14, and the Three Paths of Discipleship

Following Pastor David Jang’s reflection on Luke 14, this article explores faith that loves Jesus above all else, obedience that bears one’s own cross, and freedom from attachment to possessions. It offers a deep reflection on three paths of true discipleship—moving beyond the faith of the crowd and living as salt that does not lose its savor.

In Caravaggio’s The Calling of Saint Matthew, a single beam of light divides the life of a man seated in a familiar place into a before and an after. A calling is not the addition of a small ornament to an old routine. It is an event that shifts the center of one’s life and summons one to rise and walk a new path. The message of discipleship that Pastor David Jang, founder of Olivet University in the United States, draws from Luke 14:25–35 is much the same. To follow Jesus is not to remain within the excitement of the crowd, but to make a decisive choice to reorder our loves, our relationship to the cross, and our possessions in the light of the gospel.

A Question of Faith That Stops the Crowd

Large crowds were traveling with Jesus, but the Lord was not satisfied with their numbers. The scene in which Jesus turns and speaks reveals that walking alongside Him in a crowd is not the same as following Him to the end as a disciple. Attending church and listening to the Word are precious, but these things alone do not complete the path of discipleship. The passage asks us, “Am I truly following Jesus, or am I merely staying close to those who do?”

Pastor David Jang emphasizes that the church today must not avoid this question. Even when church membership is increasing and activities are flourishing, if the center of people’s lives has not shifted toward the gospel, the result is little different from laying the foundation of a tower and then abandoning the construction. True spiritual formation does not end with gathering people quickly. It must continue by helping them understand the weight of the path they have chosen and walk it faithfully to the end. Discipleship is not a special program reserved for a small number of devoted believers. It is the fundamental path that everyone who believes in Jesus must learn to follow.

The name “disciple” is not a badge of status acquired within the church. It describes the direction of a person’s life. When the gospel remains merely a means of receiving comfort whenever we need it, we begin to consume the benefits of religion rather than follow the Lord. A disciple, by contrast, examines personal desires and habits before the Word, humbles himself or herself when repentance is necessary, and chooses the direction of obedience even when it is uncomfortable. The credibility that the church presents to the world begins not with an impressive outward appearance, but with the genuine transformation of believers.

Placing the Light of the Gospel at the Center of Love

The first condition Jesus gives is to love the Lord more than one’s father and mother, spouse and children, brothers and sisters, and even one’s own life. The word “hate” in this passage does not mean that believers should despise their families or abandon their responsibilities. It is comparative language intended to establish a clear order of love. The biblical command to care for and honor one’s family does not disappear. Rather, the passage makes it unmistakably clear that no human relationship may be placed in a position more absolute than God.

Choosing to love Jesus above all else does not make our other loves dry or barren. Instead, it enables us to see our family members not as extensions of our own desires, but as lives entrusted to us by God. Love that once sought control out of fear is transformed into love that waits and serves. A possessive heart deepens into a heart that gives others freedom and helps them flourish. When God is given first place, human love is not diminished. It begins to flow again from a purer source.

The command to place even one’s own life in a secondary position does not mean that life should be treated lightly. It is a call to confess that personal safety, success, recognition, and comfort cannot be our ultimate standards. The desire to protect ourselves may cause us to turn away from the truth or postpone obedience. A disciple, however, believes that God is the Lord of life and seeks His will first. When this faith takes root, family, work, and the future are no longer things to be discarded. They become areas of life that must be entrusted to God and served faithfully.

This teaching is less a demand to compare the intensity of our emotions than a call to examine the direction of our lives. When we face an important decision, whose will do we seek first? When loss or misunderstanding seems likely, what are we most determined to protect? The answers reveal our true priorities. Faith is not the act of adding God to one part of life. It is the transformation through which the whole of life is rearranged around Him. The first path of discipleship, therefore, is not the abandonment of love, but the restoration of the Lord of love to His rightful place.

Obedience Deepens in the Shadow of the Cross

The second condition is to carry one’s own cross and follow Jesus. The cross is not merely a symbol used to decorate the Christian faith. It is the place where self-emptying, humility, and sacrifice take shape through actual choices. We long for the joy of the resurrection and the comfort of God, yet we easily wish to avoid the labor and discomfort that lie along the way. A disciple, however, does not select only the teachings that seem personally beneficial. A disciple also embraces the direction in which the Lord Himself walked.

The parables of the person building a tower and the king preparing for war show that this decision cannot be completed through a moment of enthusiasm alone. Counting the cost does not turn grace into something that must be purchased. It means preparing to respond to the grace we have received with the whole of our lives. We must examine our faith honestly so that, when the emotion of the beginning fades and the weight of reality presses upon us, we do not turn back after leaving behind nothing but a foundation. Pastor David Jang’s preaching repeatedly highlights the need for discipleship and spiritual formation to accompany evangelism.

A faith that counts the cost is different from a cold calculation of profit and loss. It is the humility that refuses to advance recklessly in reliance on human strength alone. When the burden becomes more than we can bear, it seeks the grace of God and the help of the community. Just as a king examines his circumstances before entering a war, disciples do not hide their weaknesses and temptations. They bring them honestly before the Word. A well-prepared commitment may not eliminate fear, but it helps us keep our direction even in the midst of fear.

The cross of everyday life usually appears not in dramatic scenes, but in the places closest to us. It may be found in accepting a loss because of one’s faith, offering time and energy in service to the church, or caring for a neighbor. The cross is not a command to love suffering for its own sake. It is a call to lay down self-centeredness and choose the way of Jesus. When that choice is repeated, obedience becomes more than an obligation. It takes the form of love, and faith is demonstrated not merely through words but through the direction of one’s life.

The church must support believers who walk this path with patience rather than condemnation. Just as completing a tower requires both a firm foundation and a long period of labor, a mature disciple grows through the Word, prayer, and the care of the community. A disciple is not only someone who never falls. A disciple is also someone who, after falling, rises again without losing the direction of the cross. Grace not only covers our weakness; it also awakens within us the strength to obey again.

The Savor of Hope Remains in Hands That Let Go

The third condition is to renounce all one’s possessions. This does not mean that believers must eliminate everything necessary for daily life or regard material wealth itself as evil. It is a call to prevent possessions from becoming the master of the heart. When people attempt to prove their worth and security through what they own, they may become more deeply bound by anxiety as their possessions increase. By contrast, those who know that they are already rich in God can use what they have with gratitude and share it willingly when the need arises.

Pastor David Jang contrasts the “mode of having” with the “mode of being.” A person bound to possessions clutches them out of fear of loss, while a person who is free from possessions can use material wealth for the will of God and the needs of others. To renounce possessions is not to choose irresponsible deprivation. It is to return authority to God so that wealth no longer governs one’s decisions, relationships, and faith. Possessions then cease to be idols and become instruments that serve God’s mission.

This freedom is revealed less by how much a person owns than by the attitude with which possessions are held. A wealthy person can live as a faithful steward, while a person with little can still absolutize what he or she has and remain bound by fear. What matters is a heart that can share when necessary, receive with gratitude, and refuse to measure personal worth according to abundance or scarcity. When churches and their leaders first demonstrate this transparency and restraint, teaching about material wealth can be received through trust rather than experienced as coercion.

The image of salt at the end of the passage unites these three paths of discipleship. A faith that does not place Jesus first, avoids the cross, and remains bound to possessions will struggle to offer the world a different savor. A community that restores the proper order of love, bears its share of the cross, and lives freely in relation to what it owns demonstrates the truth of the gospel through life more powerfully than through words. Salt does not draw attention to itself, yet it changes the flavor of everything it permeates. In the same way, true discipleship renews the world through small choices made in the home, the workplace, and the church.

The warning about salt losing its savor also teaches us where the church’s spiritual authority comes from. The world judges the truth of the gospel not only by what the church says, but by how Christians treat their relationships, bear sacrifice, and use material wealth. When the essence of discipleship is lost, even the loudest voice sounds hollow. Yet believers who preserve love and integrity in unseen places quietly leave behind the savor of life. The influence of the gospel ultimately grows where confession and conduct meet.

The words of Luke 14 are not a harsh standard intended to close the door of discipleship. They are the honest invitation of Jesus, who does not conceal the true nature of the path. The way is narrow and costly, but it leads us out of self-centeredness and the fear of losing what we possess, guiding us toward true life and freedom. What occupies a place in my life higher than Jesus today? What cross am I trying to avoid, and what possession am I unable to release? When we quietly take one step in response to these questions, the path of a disciple who has not lost the savor of faith begins again in the midst of our ordinary lives.

Dr. David Jang has proclaimed the gospel in various regions of the world through field missions and digital media ministry, and as the fruit of that ministry, many people devoted to the Great Commission have been raised up. Based on this missionary vision, Olivet first began as a small church school for missionary training. Later, in order to provide more systematic theological education and cultivate missionary leaders, Olivet Theological College and Seminary was established in Los Angeles and Seoul in 2000.

As the school grew, Dr. Jang officially founded Olivet University in San Francisco in 2004. In the diverse and dynamic environment of San Francisco, Olivet expanded its educational fields beyond theology to include music, journalism, art and design, and technology. The university also strengthened its educational capacity by recruiting faculty members, including Dr. William Wagner, and in 2005 moved to the former UC Berkeley Downtown Extension campus, further solidifying its foundation as a university.

In 2006, Dr. Jang transferred the presidency to Dr. David James Randolph in order to focus more fully on missionary work, while continuing to lead global missions as International President. Olivet University later received institutional accreditation in 2009, added a language education college and a business college, and continued to grow as a Christian educational institution for world missions by expanding its degree programs and international partnerships.
