Pastor David Jang: The Foundation of the Gospel and the Calling to Be Fishers of Men

Following Pastor David Jang’s sermon, this reflection explores Jesus Christ as the one true foundation, devotion that endures the trial by fire, and the calling to become fishers of men. It warmly and thoughtfully considers why the church must exist beyond buildings and events—as a house of prayer and the gospel, devoted to the salvation of even one soul.

Beneath a gray sky, Pieter Bruegel’s The Tower of Babel rises toward heaven while already carrying within it the shadow of collapse. Its height inspires awe, yet one question ultimately remains: What is this tower built upon? The question that Pastor David Jang’s sermon places before the church begins at precisely this point.

The issue is not how high we have built, but upon whom we have built. At the heart of the sermon are the words of 1 Corinthians 3:10–11. The only foundation upon which the church can be built is Jesus Christ. Grandeur emptied of the gospel ultimately leaves behind nothing more than the outward shell of a building. People, finances, organizations, and reputation may appear to sustain a community for a time, but when the wind and rain come, the hidden foundation is exposed. The life of the church depends not on its visible height, but on its unseen foundation.

Church dedication, therefore, is a far more solemn confession than a celebration marking the completion of a building. It is an opportunity to ask again before God why this place and community were established, whose name they will exalt, and where they will go from here. The sermon’s declaration that a dedication without Jesus Christ remains merely the dedication of a building rather than the dedication of a church calls us back to what is essential at every moment of achievement.

The Unseen Foundation Bears the Weight of the Gospel

A foundation does not reveal itself in calm weather. But when rain pours down and winds blow, the house built on rock and the house built on sand can no longer stand in the same way. This is why the sermon repeatedly warns against money and prestige, ecclesiastical power and popularity. Trials shake the outward appearance of a community while exposing what has truly occupied its center.

The gold, silver, precious stones, wood, hay, and straw described in 1 Corinthians 3 illuminate even the motives of those who build the church. What is built out of pride, greed, or the desire to rise above others disappears in the fire. Labor offered in humility, obedience, sacrifice, and love, however, leaves behind a radiance refined by the flames. What matters is not simply how much we have done, but with what heart and with what materials we have built. Only devotion built upon the gospel can endure testing and remain.

Pastor David Jang describes church dedication not as a one-time event, but as an ongoing process in which the community continually examines itself upon the gospel of Christ throughout its entire life. Yesterday’s devotion cannot replace today’s obedience, and past revival does not guarantee present faithfulness. Every day, the church must examine its motives before the Word and repent so that no other value takes the place of its true foundation. To guard the foundation is, ultimately, to return again and again to the gospel we first received.

This question does not end with the church building. As 1 Corinthians 3:16 teaches, if every believer is God’s temple, then we must also examine the foundation of our inner lives. Even when the outward form of faith appears orderly, the soul can become hollow if it is not built up through the Word and prayer. Conversely, even a small and unnoticed life can become an unshakable temple when love and obedience are steadily laid within it.

Materials of Grace That Survive the Fire

The trial by fire is a frightening image, but in the sermon it does not signify despair alone. It is also a season of discernment, revealing what burns away and what remains. When financial difficulties, organizational conflict, misunderstandings between people, and the temptation of reputation press in, a community comes face to face with what it has truly relied upon. If its foundation in Jesus Christ is clear, it will not lose its direction even amid the shaking.

Grace is not an ornament that removes trials. It is the power that enables us to choose the way of the gospel in the midst of them. Just as Jesus overcame temptation through the Word, the church must ask at every decisive crossroads, “Is this truly the way of the gospel?” Even when immediate gain appears attractive, the church must not bargain away its holy purpose. The more it prospers, the more deeply it must learn the humility of remembering God. Blessing is not a possession given for complacency, but a trust that brings greater responsibility.

The truth of dedication is therefore revealed less in a splendid ceremony than in the days that follow. When offering our talents and finances, we must ask whether they are decorations for our vanity or wholehearted offerings, like a burnt offering, for the advancement of the gospel. When we place God’s glory before the desire to preserve our own names and choose faithful stewardship over the impulse to possess, the church remains rooted in grace. What survives the fire is the work built with love and sacrifice, truth and obedience.

At this point, biblical reflection moves from abstraction into life. To know the Word means to make choices according to that Word in moments of crisis. Faith becomes clearer when personal interests are shaken than when life is peaceful. A crisis within the community, therefore, does not necessarily mean the end. It can become a painful but necessary season of refining, in which we learn again what must be released and what must be held fast.

From a House of Prayer to Fishers of Men

For the church to stand upon the foundation of Jesus Christ means that its purpose becomes clear. The church described in the sermon is a place where people worship and pray to God, and where even one more person is helped to come to salvation. When money, self-interest, struggles for position, and ecclesiastical power take the center, the house of prayer for all nations loses its true face. By contrast, even if a church is neither large nor impressive, God’s grace dwells where the Word, prayer, and love for one another remain alive.

Yet the church’s calling is not fulfilled simply by gathering. The identity Jesus gave His disciples when He called them to become “fishers of men” points to where worship must lead next. The church is not a warehouse that stores the gospel inside. It is a community that carries the message of life toward those who are lost. The reason believers learn the Word and serve one another within the church is so that they may be sent back into the world.

In Pastor David Jang’s message, church dedication and the mission of evangelism are joined as one. A sanctuary is a place meant to welcome people, teach the Word, and send them into the world through prayer. Programs and events, charity and service are all valuable, but they can lose their direction when separated from the gospel’s purpose of turning even one soul back to the Lord. Just as Paul did not run aimlessly, every labor of the community must have a clear center: salvation.

To speak of “fishing for people” does not mean reducing human beings to numbers or treating them as measures of success. Paul entered the worlds of many different kinds of people because he longed to save at least some. In the same way, evangelism is an act of service in which we draw near to others because we love them. Some may participate in this calling through praise, others through teaching and discipleship, and still others through media or simple acts of sharing. The methods may differ, but the question remains the same: Through our labor, is anyone truly hearing the gospel and returning to God?

Faith That Waits for Fruit and Returns to the World

The parable of the barren fig tree prevents the church from taking lightly the time it has been given. The repetition of worship and the maintenance of an organization do not, by themselves, mean that the mission has been fulfilled. If the years pass without the fruit of salvation or visible traces of love and obedience, the community must ask again why it exists. The fact that more time has been given is a reason for hope, but it is also a responsibility to dig around the tree and fertilize it.

Repentance does not end with admitting failure. It means stopping an aimless race and walking once again toward a single soul. It means humbling the heart so that we do not forget God in times of abundance. This is why, as the church grows, it must hold to the gospel more clearly, serve more people, and pray more deeply. Prosperity is not proof that the mission has been completed. It is a summons to a greater mission.

The sermon also urges the church to record the history of its journey. Writing down who heard the gospel and returned, which prayers were answered, and how God led the community through difficult seasons is not an exercise in boasting about the past. It allows the next generation to remember God’s faithful presence through those records and to gain courage to walk the path of the gospel entrusted to them. Memory does not bind a community to the past; it carries its calling into the future.

The church’s deepest hope is not found in a life entirely free from fiery trials. It is found in prayer and worship that remain after the fire, in devotion offered in truth, and in love directed toward even one soul. Buildings may one day grow old, but the fruit of people encountering the gospel and returning to God reaches toward eternity. A church built upon the foundation of Christ does not boast in its height. It bears witness to its foundation through the lives restored by the gospel.

Now the question returns to us. What is the foundation of the house of faith I am building? Is the community where I belong a fence that protects my comfort, or a house of prayer that opens its doors to bring life to others? If I do not take even one step today toward the person entrusted to me with the gospel and love, then where am I truly living out my identity as a fisher of men?

Dr. David Jang has proclaimed the gospel in various regions of the world through field missions and digital media ministry, and as the fruit of that ministry, many people devoted to the Great Commission have been raised up. Based on this missionary vision, Olivet first began as a small church school for missionary training. Later, in order to provide more systematic theological education and cultivate missionary leaders, Olivet Theological College and Seminary was established in Los Angeles and Seoul in 2000.

As the school grew, Dr. Jang officially founded Olivet University in San Francisco in 2004. In the diverse and dynamic environment of San Francisco, Olivet expanded its educational fields beyond theology to include music, journalism, art and design, and technology. The university also strengthened its educational capacity by recruiting faculty members, including Dr. William Wagner, and in 2005 moved to the former UC Berkeley Downtown Extension campus, further solidifying its foundation as a university.

In 2006, Dr. Jang transferred the presidency to Dr. David James Randolph in order to focus more fully on missionary work, while continuing to lead global missions as International President. Olivet University later received institutional accreditation in 2009, added a language education college and a business college, and continued to grow as a Christian educational institution for world missions by expanding its degree programs and international partnerships.
