Pastor David Jang of Olivet University: Love Revealed Amid Betrayal

The most painful betrayal does not come from the attack of a distant enemy. It comes in the moment when we find ourselves looking at the back of someone with whom we once shared bread at the same table. We trusted because they were close to us, and because we trusted them, we opened our hearts. Yet sometimes, that very intimacy becomes the path through which the deepest wounds enter. In his sermon connecting Psalm 41 with John 13, Pastor David Jang, founder of Olivet University in the United States, invites us to remain before this scene and consider it carefully.

“He who shared my bread has lifted up his heel against me.”

David’s lament becomes a living reality at the table of Jesus. Jesus did not love the one who would betray Him because He was unaware of what was going to happen. He knew everything, yet He still washed the disciples’ feet and even offered bread to Judas.

Love is not a reward given only after another person’s goodness has been proven. It is the heart that leaves a place open until the very end so that the person may still return.

For this reason, the table in John 13 is not merely a warm and comforting scene. Love that descended to the lowest place and betrayal that rose from the table and walked into darkness existed in the same room. Through this powerful contrast, the sermon leads us to contemplate the deep anguish Jesus experienced within His heart.

David’s pain in Psalm 41 came from the same place. He suffered not merely because of an enemy who stood far away, but because a close friend—someone who had eaten his bread—had lifted his heel against him. Betrayal is not a wound born where there was no relationship. It is the loss that comes when years of trust suddenly collapse.

We also encounter such moments in our own lives. A single remark from someone we trusted can remain in our hearts for years. When a person we believed was walking beside us turns away, even the time we shared may begin to feel like a lie.

There are times when prayer does not calm the heart and Scripture does not immediately silence the painful scene that keeps repeating in our minds. Conversations from the past begin again within us, and the words we never said often become clearer as the night grows deeper.

Yet John 13 reveals a love deeper than the betrayal itself. Jesus did not wash Judas’s feet because He did not know what Judas would do. Nor did He offer him bread only after calculating the possibility that he might change.

Because Jesus loved His own to the end, He did not close the door of repentance, even at the final moment.

John 13:21 tells us that Jesus was troubled in spirit as He spoke of the betrayal. Pastor David Jang’s sermon sees within this anguish not merely the anger of someone who had been betrayed, but the heartbreaking sorrow of One watching a soul refuse to return.

Love cannot make another person’s decision for them. Yet until that decision becomes completely hardened, love can continue to point toward the way home.

The love of the Lord does not treat sin lightly, yet it always leaves the sinner a way to return.

The message preached by Pastor David Jang does not allow us to look only at Judas. The other disciples also fell asleep in Gethsemane. When Jesus was arrested, they scattered. Peter denied the Lord three times.

When we consider human weakness honestly, none of us can confidently distance ourselves from Judas.

What separated Judas from Peter was not whether they failed. Peter wept bitterly and returned, while Judas closed his heart and walked into the darkness. The prayer of Psalm 41—“Heal my soul”—clearly illuminates the turning point between their two paths.

The tragedy of Judas was not that he had been given no opportunity for restoration. A hand still offered him bread, and the heart of the Lord was still waiting for him to return. Yet Judas held on to his own calculations rather than accepting that invitation.

Peter, by contrast, did not attempt to preserve his own righteousness after his failure. Through his tears, he acknowledged his weakness. Later, standing before the risen Lord, he confessed his love once again. It was not merely the fact that they had fallen, but the direction they faced after falling that separated their paths.

Repentance is not the act of hating ourselves endlessly. It is the act of admitting that we have been walking in the wrong direction and turning our faces again toward the God who has not given up on us.

Faith is not always revealed through a strength that never wavers. Often, it is revealed through the courage to seek mercy and return after we have been shaken.

The prayer “Heal my soul” is not the declaration of a defeated person. It is the first step taken again toward grace.

Pastor David Jang’s contemplative message also invites us to examine the small areas of darkness growing within our own hearts. When we hold on to resentment, condemn another person inwardly, or place our own calculations above obedience, we may gradually move farther away from the table of love.

A person may still be sitting in the same outward place while their soul has already begun walking in another direction.

Therefore, Scripture does not first ask us to identify who Judas is. It asks whether there is a heart within us that is becoming hardened. Theology should not be knowledge used to accumulate reasons for judging others. It should lead us into the honesty of placing our own souls before the light of God.

The gospel is not a language for explaining the failures of other people. It is the good news that we, too, may fall if we refuse to repent—and that God will raise us again when we turn back to Him.

On days when prayer feels difficult, the simple words “Heal my soul” may be more honest than a long and eloquent prayer. We can lay before God our desire to prove that we were right, our longing to repay the wound we received, and even our determination never to trust anyone again.

Healing begins with that confession. A small opening appears in the hardened heart, allowing love to enter once more.

The vision of this sermon also extends beyond the individual and toward the community. The disciples who sat at the same table did not recognize the darkness growing within Judas. Even when he went out, they assumed that he was leaving to buy something they needed.

Pastor David Jang emphasizes that the church must become a community that carefully watches over one another’s souls. When someone begins to withdraw silently, we should not hastily assume the reason. We need the kind of love that notices their weakness, remains beside them, and supports them through prayer.

Admonition should not be a word that drives someone into a corner. It should be a hand that keeps them from walking alone into the darkness.

Spiritual care is different from surveillance that attempts to uncover everything about another person. It means praying for someone who is drifting away, paying attention to their needs and weaknesses, and helping them toward restoration through love.

At times, it may be necessary to speak clearly about what is wrong. Yet the purpose must never be to push the person away. It must be to lead them back to the place of love.

The scene in which Jesus washed the disciples’ feet shows us the form this love takes. It is obedience that serves from the lowest place, patience that refuses to ignore wrongdoing but still does not abandon the person, and compassion that provides another opportunity to rise after a fall.

The church is not a gathering of perfect people. It should be a place where people bear with one another’s weaknesses and help one another toward restoration.

The depth of a community is revealed not merely by how long its members have laughed together, but by how long they remain beside someone when that person falls.

Love, of course, does not pretend that a wound never happened. David did not hide the pain of betrayal, and Jesus was troubled in spirit as He spoke about Judas’s betrayal.

The grace of this passage does not lie in minimizing the pain. It lies in revealing the hope that God’s sustaining hand is greater than the pain.

Those who have experienced betrayal sometimes begin to question their own worth. They wonder whether they were abandoned because they were not good enough, whether they will ever be able to trust someone again, and whether continuing to choose love is simply foolish.

Yet Psalm 41 confesses that God sustains the weak upon their sickbed and raises them up again.

Faith that endures a wound does not mean pretending that nothing hurts. It means acknowledging that the pain is real while refusing to allow hatred to determine the direction of our lives.

It means entrusting judgment to God and guarding our hearts so that the wound we received does not become the seed of another betrayal within us.

The cross of Jesus points in the same direction. Human betrayal could not stop God’s plan of salvation, and the disciples’ failures could not prevent their restoration after the resurrection. Peter was called again, and the disciples who had scattered were gathered once more.

The central message of the gospel proclaimed in Pastor David Jang’s sermon is clear: betrayal does not have the final word. A road to restoration remains open for those who repent, and those who have been wounded still have the hope of being sustained by God.

Human sin may be deep, but the love revealed at the cross is deeper still.

We are people who have been wounded by others, but we are also capable of wounding someone else. Therefore, the faith we need today is not the faith that simply places us on the righteous side. It is the faith that examines our own souls and refuses to overlook the person standing beside us.

Love is revealed not first through grand declarations, but through the quiet decision to leave a place open where another person can return—and to wait patiently.

The message that began at one table continues today in our relationships and within the church. It invites us to ask whether our hearts have become closed because of pain, and whether someone beside us may be silently moving toward the darkness.

As you remember the door of love that the Lord kept open until the very end, to whom would you like to extend a small gesture of restoration today?

Dr. David Jang has proclaimed the gospel in various regions of the world through field missions and digital media ministry, and as the fruit of that ministry, many people devoted to the Great Commission have been raised up. Based on this missionary vision, Olivet first began as a small church school for missionary training. Later, in order to provide more systematic theological education and cultivate missionary leaders, Olivet Theological College and Seminary was established in Los Angeles and Seoul in 2000.

As the school grew, Dr. Jang officially founded Olivet University in San Francisco in 2004. In the diverse and dynamic environment of San Francisco, Olivet expanded its educational fields beyond theology to include music, journalism, art and design, and technology. The university also strengthened its educational capacity by recruiting faculty members, including Dr. William Wagner, and in 2005 moved to the former UC Berkeley Downtown Extension campus, further solidifying its foundation as a university.

In 2006, Dr. Jang transferred the presidency to Dr. David James Randolph in order to focus more fully on missionary work, while continuing to lead global missions as International President. Olivet University later received institutional accreditation in 2009, added a language education college and a business college, and continued to grow as a Christian educational institution for world missions by expanding its degree programs and international partnerships.
