Pastor David Jang (Olivet University) on 1 Corinthians 10: Learning Faith and Gratitude in the Wilderness

Following Pastor David Jang’s sermon on 1 Corinthians 10, this reflection examines the failures of the wilderness as a mirror of faith. It explores the path of spiritual maturity that moves beyond pride and grumbling, remembers the grace already received, and walks toward God’s rest and glory with gratitude and gentleness.

Dante’s The Divine Comedy opens with a man who has lost his way standing in the middle of a dark wood. Realizing that one is lost is unsettling, yet it is from that very moment that the journey to find the way back begins. Pastor David Jang, founder of Olivet University in the United States, regards the wilderness of 1 Corinthians 10 as such a place of spiritual awakening. He presents the failures of ancient Israel as a mirror reflecting the condition of our faith today. Paul’s warning that the heart most confident of standing may, in fact, be closest to falling opens the door to this sermon.

Faith Before the Mirror: The Pride Exposed by the Wilderness

The Corinthian church regarded baptism, communion, knowledge of the Word, and spiritual experiences as signs proving its maturity. Paul did not deny that they had received these gifts. Yet he warned that none of them could serve as grounds for declaring themselves spiritually secure. The words of 1 Corinthians 10:12—“Let anyone who thinks they are standing take care not to fall”—remind us that the deeper our faith becomes, the deeper our self-examination must also become.

The Israelites in the wilderness were under the cloud, passed through the sea, and partook of spiritual food and drink. Their journey clearly bore the traces of grace. Yet experiences of grace did not automatically bring them to spiritual maturity. Pastor David Jang invites us to look carefully at this gap. What matters more than what we experienced in the past is the kind of heart with which we stand before that grace today.

The danger of spiritual pride does not lie in denying that the grace we received was real. It lies in taking genuine grace as our personal possession and turning it into evidence that we are superior to others. The problem of the Corinthian church was not that its members had experienced the Word, baptism, and communion. Their problem was the illusion that those experiences had released them from the continuing need for repentance and obedience. Grace is not a medal announcing that we have arrived. It should remain a living memory that leads us to depend on God until the end.

The wilderness is not a place where we merely observe the failures of others. It is a mirror in which we must examine our own hearts. Before that mirror, neither the number of years we have believed, the amount of knowledge we possess, nor our position within the community can answer on our behalf. Before the Word becomes an instrument for judging others, it must first become the light that exposes our own pride and self-confidence. To grow deeper in Bible reflection is not merely to feel that we know more. It is to recognize that we are still people who must walk carefully.

When Grace Is Forgotten, Grumbling Hardens the Heart

The failures Paul recalls from the wilderness include idolatry, sexual immorality, testing the Lord, and grumbling. These are not merely separate items on a list of sins. They are different expressions of a heart that trusts what can be seen more than it trusts God and refuses to wait for His timing. The impatience that constructs a golden calf, the corruption that surrenders itself to desire, the unbelief that repeatedly tests whether God is truly present, and the complaining that forgets what has already been received all move in the same direction. They lead toward the loss of the memory of grace.

Grumbling, in particular, is more than a passing feeling of dissatisfaction. In the flow of the sermon, it begins with forgetting the guidance and provision God has already given. That forgetfulness then hardens the heart. The Israelites complained even after receiving manna and quail and being led by the pillars of cloud and fire. Their story shows not that grace was lacking, but how easily people can be shaken when the heart that remembers grace disappears. Repentance, therefore, does not end with admitting that we were wrong. It means returning to the place where we remember the grace we had forgotten.

As the warning in Hebrews teaches, those who hear God’s voice today and still harden their hearts may stop at the very threshold of the promised rest. Gratitude, by contrast, is not an attitude that disguises or romanticizes reality. It is the posture of faith that refuses to forget that God has been leading us, even in the middle of the wilderness. When the heart becomes tender, the Word no longer remains only a rebuke. It becomes a voice that opens the road before us once again. Gentleness is not weakness. It is the strength to humble ourselves before God so that unbelief and grumbling cannot take possession of our hearts.

This is also why Scripture does not conceal the history of human failure. As the Bible teaches that all Scripture is useful for instruction, rebuke, correction, and training in righteousness, the wilderness record does not place us among spectators who condemn others. It calls us into the place of transformation. The honesty of biblical reflection requires us to move beyond analyzing the failures of others and ask whether the same seeds are present within us. Those who look long into the mirror learn to cleanse their own hearts before examining the faces of others.

Even in the Midst of Testing, a Way of Hope Remains Open

Had the warnings of the wilderness been nothing more than a heavy message of judgment, 1 Corinthians 10 would have imprisoned people in fear. Yet in verse 13, Paul declares that God is faithful and that, with every trial, He also provides a way through it. The purpose of showing us the history of failure is not to make us surrender to despair. It is to keep us awake so that we do not repeat the same path. The warning itself contains the hope that another choice is still possible.

A trial is not a mark proving the absence of faith. It is a place where what we truly depend upon is revealed. In that moment, we may respond impatiently and put God to the test, or we may remember His Word and grace and endure in faith. The “way of escape” emphasized in the sermon is not a promise that every difficulty will disappear immediately. It is the assurance that even within the trial, God opens a path by which we can choose gratitude instead of grumbling, trust instead of unbelief, and gentleness instead of harshness. Faith does not pretend that the wilderness does not exist. Faith confesses that we have not been abandoned within it.

At this point, spiritual growth appears not as an accumulation of spectacular experiences but as a transformation in the way we respond. Faced with the same lack, we no longer complain as we once did. Faced with the same delay, we no longer hastily construct an idol. Faced with the same temptation, we refuse to forget God. These quiet changes are the evidence of maturity. This sermon does not portray a spiritually mature person as someone who can never fall. Rather, it portrays such a person as someone who knows they can fall, examines themselves before the Word, and looks for the way God has provided.

So That Even Eating and Drinking May Be for the Glory of God

The mirror of the wilderness ultimately asks about the direction of our lives. The words of 1 Corinthians 10:31—“Whether you eat or drink, or whatever you do, do everything for the glory of God”—are not a grand slogan detached from ordinary life. They call us to turn away from the path that dishonored God through idolatry and grumbling and to acknowledge His sovereignty in even our most ordinary choices. Faith is not an emotion revealed only in extraordinary moments. It takes shape through the attitudes repeated in our daily lives.

A life that seeks God’s glory therefore begins by remembering the grace already received. When churches, families, schools, and communities resist boasting about what they have accomplished and instead remember the One who has led them this far, ministry and education cease to be instruments of self-expansion. They become responses of gratitude. Scripture records the failures of the past without concealing them so that the next generation will not walk the same path. The purpose of the Word’s teaching, rebuke, correction, and training in righteousness is ultimately to bring people to maturity and prepare them to live out every good work.

Gentleness is essential on this path. The sermon recalls how even Moses, after repeatedly facing the grumbling of the people in the wilderness, struck the rock twice in anger and was unable to enter the Promised Land. This passage shows how important it is for those in positions of responsibility to guard their hearts. Leaders, teachers, and parents need more than the strength to control every situation. They need the patience and tenderness to trust God’s timing and deal graciously with people. A gentle heart does not close the door that leads toward rest.

Before the wilderness mirror held up by Pastor David Jang, the final question is not, “How much grace have I received?” It is, “How am I remembering that grace today?” When the confidence that we are standing makes us humbler and more grateful, it becomes the fruit of faith. Yet when it causes us to look down on others and stop repenting, it may become a sign that we are already beginning to fall. God’s rest is opened not to those who declare themselves complete, but to those who hear the Word, allow their hearts to become tender, and continue in obedience.

The wilderness is a place we must pass through, but it is also a classroom we must never forget. There we learn how to abandon idols, guard ourselves against desire, refuse to put God to the test, and choose gratitude instead of grumbling. When these lessons begin to permeate even the ordinary moments of eating and drinking, our lives gradually turn toward the glory of God. Is my heart becoming tender today as I remember the grace I have received, or is it quietly hardening beneath the thought that I am already standing securely?

Dr. David Jang has proclaimed the gospel in various regions of the world through field missions and digital media ministry, and as the fruit of that ministry, many people devoted to the Great Commission have been raised up. Based on this missionary vision, Olivet first began as a small church school for missionary training. Later, in order to provide more systematic theological education and cultivate missionary leaders, Olivet Theological College and Seminary was established in Los Angeles and Seoul in 2000.

As the school grew, Dr. Jang officially founded Olivet University in San Francisco in 2004. In the diverse and dynamic environment of San Francisco, Olivet expanded its educational fields beyond theology to include music, journalism, art and design, and technology. The university also strengthened its educational capacity by recruiting faculty members, including Dr. William Wagner, and in 2005 moved to the former UC Berkeley Downtown Extension campus, further solidifying its foundation as a university.

In 2006, Dr. Jang transferred the presidency to Dr. David James Randolph in order to focus more fully on missionary work, while continuing to lead global missions as International President. Olivet University later received institutional accreditation in 2009, added a language education college and a business college, and continued to grow as a Christian educational institution for world missions by expanding its degree programs and international partnerships.
