Pastor David Jang’s Reflections on the Lord’s Prayer: From Reciting It to Living It

Drawing on Pastor David Jang’s sermon on the Lord’s Prayer, this reflection explores the grace of calling the holy God our Father. It considers how the three petitions concerning God’s name, kingdom, and will lead us beyond familiar recitation into repentance, love, and daily obedience, inviting us to examine the direction of a life shaped by prayer.

In Millet’s The Angelus, two people who have been working the soil bow their heads, and the stillness of prayer settles over the field. The farming tools beside them and the work left unfinished suggest that prayer need not be a departure from everyday life; it can be a moment to reconsider the direction of that life. Pastor David Jang’s sermon on the Lord’s Prayer likewise leads us beyond familiar recitation, toward a life in which we call the holy God our Father and live under His reign and according to His will.

There are times when we recite the Lord’s Prayer without stumbling over a single word, yet remain preoccupied with our own anxieties from beginning to end. Remembering its words and allowing those words to examine us are two different things. Through the three petitions concerning God’s name, kingdom, and will, this sermon asks what those who pray should live for. To understand the Lord’s Prayer deeply is not merely to explain its meaning, but to examine our day in its light.

When We Pause Before God’s Holiness, Love Grows Deeper

The confession that God is love brings rest to a weary heart. Yet when we understand that love merely as a kindness that accepts our desires without question, we may find comfort while failing to recognize who God truly is. To understand the love proclaimed in 1 John 4:8, the sermon first directs our attention to God’s holiness. Love is not fully understood by setting holiness aside, but within a relationship with the holy God.

The scene in which Moses removes his sandals before the burning bush reveals the threshold of that relationship. Confronted with the command in Exodus 3:5, he could no longer approach God on his own familiar terms. God is the Creator, unconfined by our thoughts and desires, who sustains all that He has made. Worship and gratitude are not a price reluctantly paid under the pressure of His power. They are the response of creatures finding their rightful place before the One who made them.

Yet recognizing God’s holiness does not mean merely standing at a distance in fear. The almighty God is also the One who calls human beings into a personal relationship and waits for them in love. We must not mistake His patience for powerlessness, nor imagine His omnipotence as coercion without love. The sermon cautions against both extremes: love without holiness can slide into self-indulgence, while holiness without love can harden into empty formality.

This holiness and love are revealed concretely through Jesus Christ. To know God in Jesus is not to remain with a vague sense of comfort, but to encounter His love personally. This is also why the sermon considers sin and judgment in Romans 1. The grace of salvation is not the shallow reassurance we gain by dismissing the gravity of sin. It is the life-giving gospel of being rescued in Jesus even as we recognize the solemn reality of judgment.

When We Call Him Father, Grace Opens the Door to Prayer

The opening words of the Lord’s Prayer address God as both exalted in heaven and near to us as our Father. The words “in heaven” carry reverence; the words “our Father” carry intimacy. In Jesus Christ, through the indwelling of the Holy Spirit, we too are able to call Him Father. The grace of calling Him Father is not permission to forget His holiness, but the way by which we may approach that holiness in love.

Pastor David Jang explores this relationship through the “face to face” encounter described in 1 Corinthians 13:12. The hope that, although we now know only in part, we will one day know fully reminds us that the depth of faith is not determined simply by how much knowledge we possess. As we open our hearts in prayer and listen attentively to the Word, knowing about God deepens into a life of fellowship with Him. Here, too, we begin to ask whether we have been praying merely to fulfill an obligation.

This fellowship is not confined to particular places or times. We can open our hearts to the Father as the day begins, as we walk along the road, at the table, and before we fall asleep. Some answers come quickly; others require a long wait. Yet the sermon holds fast to the conviction that God answers in His good time and in His good way. Rather than pressing ourselves anxiously for immediate results, we entrust our lives to the One who hears our concerns.

The knowledge that we were loved first also begins to shape how we treat other people. As Jesus teaches in the new commandment of John 13:34, the love we have received must lead us to love one another. If we open our hearts to God while closing them to the people beside us, we need to examine how the intimacy of prayer is being expressed in our relationships. When the joy of being loved by the Father reaches our neighbors, faith becomes more than a comfort we keep to ourselves.

Cherishing God’s Name, Living in the Hope of His Kingdom

The Lord’s Prayer now reorients the center of the life we desire. The petition “Hallowed be your name” expresses reverence for who God is and for His authority. Faced with the possibility that we may exalt His name with our lips while dishonoring it through our actions, prayer naturally leads us toward repentance. We begin to ask whether the reverence we offer in worship is also present in our everyday words and attitudes.

The sermon warns that conflict, division, and wrongdoing do not remain merely private matters for believers. The conduct of those who believe in God can cause His very name to be ridiculed. Before pointing out the irreverence of others, therefore, the prayer that God’s name be hallowed calls us to examine the testimony of our own lives. When reverence for His name takes precedence over our certainty that we are right, we begin to pause before speaking carelessly.

The petition “Your kingdom come” widens the horizon of our hope. In this sermon, the kingdom of God is not merely a world awaiting us after death. It is God’s reign, which has already begun through the Holy Spirit. At the same time, it is the kingdom whose fullness we await at the Lord’s return. Because we believe that the kingdom has already come, we examine our thoughts and actions today. Because it has not yet been brought to completion, we do not abandon our hope amid an imperfect world.

When we look toward that kingdom in light of the call to repentance in Matthew 4:17, waiting cannot remain a vague expectation. We are prompted to examine our desire to ask for God’s rule while leaving our own lives under the control of our desires. This is why we must ask whether wealth, status, or our relationships with others have become masters that hold us captive. Prayer for the kingdom moves us beyond the wish to possess more and brings us to a different question: For what purpose will we use what we have already been given?

When Prayer Ends, a Day of Obedience Begins

When we reach the petition “Your will be done, on earth as it is in heaven,” prayer brings the reality beneath our feet into sharper focus. To ask that God’s justice and love be made manifest in a world marked by sin, suffering, and injustice cannot be separated from a willingness to put His will into practice. The hope described in this sermon is not a reason to escape the world, but a reason to live within it according to God’s will. Faith that looks toward heaven does not diminish our responsibilities on earth.

Pastor David Jang does not leave such a life to human resolve alone. Romans 8:26 reminds us that the Holy Spirit helps us in our weakness, even when we do not know what we ought to pray for. On days when prayer will not come, we can do more than dwell on our inadequacy: we can return to the words the Lord has taught us and open our hearts again. Repeatedly meditating on the Lord’s Prayer is not a discipline for becoming perfect at prayer. It is a way of turning our frail lives toward God once more.

As that direction becomes clearer, the way we see life also changes. Wealth and status are no longer masters we must cling to in order to prove our worth. They become gifts received from God and resources to be used for His kingdom. Rest, too, need not wait until every anxiety has disappeared. It can arise from the faith that we live within the Father’s plan and will ultimately return to Him. In place of the fear that we must sustain our lives alone, trust takes root—the trust of living as beloved children.

When we finish praying and open our eyes, the same tasks and the same people are waiting for us. Yet for those who have prayed for God’s name, kingdom, and will, everyday life is no longer time unrelated to prayer. Beyond the final words of the Lord’s Prayer lies a day we have yet to live. Today, do my words, my choices, and my love also call Him Father, just as my lips have done?

Dr. David Jang has proclaimed the gospel in various regions of the world through field missions and digital media ministry, and as the fruit of that ministry, many people devoted to the Great Commission have been raised up. Based on this missionary vision, Olivet first began as a small church school for missionary training. Later, in order to provide more systematic theological education and cultivate missionary leaders, Olivet Theological College and Seminary was established in Los Angeles and Seoul in 2000.

As the school grew, Dr. Jang officially founded Olivet University in San Francisco in 2004. In the diverse and dynamic environment of San Francisco, Olivet expanded its educational fields beyond theology to include music, journalism, art and design, and technology. The university also strengthened its educational capacity by recruiting faculty members, including Dr. William Wagner, and in 2005 moved to the former UC Berkeley Downtown Extension campus, further solidifying its foundation as a university.

In 2006, Dr. Jang transferred the presidency to Dr. David James Randolph in order to focus more fully on missionary work, while continuing to lead global missions as International President. Olivet University later received institutional accreditation in 2009, added a language education college and a business college, and continued to grow as a Christian educational institution for world missions by expanding its degree programs and international partnerships.
