Pastor David Jang (Olivet University): The Life-Giving Gospel Through the Tongue and Ear of the Learned

Following Pastor David Jang’s sermon on Isaiah 50:4, this essay reflects on the meaning of the tongue and ear of the learned. It explores faith that hears God’s voice, words of the gospel that sustain the weary, the cross and resurrection, and the mission of today’s church and believers renewed by the Holy Spirit.

Behind a closed door, a man desperately tries to speak, yet all his family hears are sounds they can no longer understand. The most chilling aspect of Kafka’s The Metamorphosis is not the transformation of the body, but the rupture of communication—the moment when one person’s words can no longer reach another.

Pastor David Jang, founder of Olivet University in the United States, turns this rupture into a spiritual question through his sermon on Isaiah 50:4 and its image of “the tongue and ear of the learned.” How can ears that fail to hear when God calls, and tongues unable to speak words of life to the weary, be restored?

Grace First Awakens Closed Ears

The people in Isaiah 50 stand in the darkness of exile. Yet the first truth God reveals is not that they have been abandoned, but that He has never abandoned them. God asks whether He ever sent them away with a certificate of divorce or sold them to creditors. Their exile did not come because God’s love had grown cold or because His saving arm had become too short. It came because of the people’s sin and disobedience—their refusal to listen to His Word.

The deepest crisis revealed in this passage, therefore, is not a devastated environment but a closed ear. When God calls and no one answers, and when His Word is heard but not received by the heart, a person can remain trapped in spiritual silence even while surrounded by countless sounds. Those who cannot hear the voice they must hear will eventually remain silent when they should speak, or pour out words that bring no strength to the wounded.

The sermon therefore addresses the obedience of the ear before the skill of the tongue.

Long and severe seasons of trial reveal what we have truly relied upon. Even when the forms of worship and fellowship change and the ordinary order of life is shaken, God has not abandoned His church. Rather, the message reminds us that the family is a final stronghold that must be protected through prayer, so that parents and children, husbands and wives, are not scattered.

The restoration of a community begins not with distant and grand declarations, but with learning once again to hear the cries of those closest to us.

In Isaiah 50:4, God gives the suffering servant “the tongue of the learned” and awakens his ear morning by morning so that he may listen as one who is taught. This prophecy is ultimately fulfilled in Jesus Christ. At the same time, it is also understood as a word that applies to those who are in Christ.

Words that sustain the weary are not talents human beings manufacture for themselves. They begin with the grace by which God first enables us to hear His voice.

The phrase “morning by morning” reveals an essential order of faith. The ear must be opened before the tongue begins to speak. We must learn before we teach, and we must first be raised by the Word before we attempt to raise someone else.

Meditating on Scripture is not merely a way to fill the mind with information. It is a time in which a hardened heart is retuned so that it may respond once again to the call of God. Faith becomes visible through the obedience that receives the Word we have heard as the direction of our lives.

The Gospel First Hears the Name of the Weary

The tongue of the learned does not refer to the eloquence of someone who possesses a great deal of knowledge. The passage defines the purpose of that tongue as knowing how “to sustain the weary with a word.”

The language of the gospel is not a means by which speakers display their abilities. It is a channel through which exhausted souls receive the words they need in order to rise again. True speech, therefore, always begins by listening to the circumstances of another person.

Pastor David Jang emphasizes that even the most eloquent tongue becomes powerless when it is not rooted in the Word of God and the Holy Spirit. Human words may move emotions for a moment, but the power to convict people of sin, lead them to repentance, and fill them with the hope of life comes from God.

The authority of the gospel, therefore, does not depend on the volume of a voice or the sophistication of its expression. It depends on where the message comes from and whom it is being used to save.

When words multiply without listening ears, truth can easily become distorted. Advice given without first hearing another person’s pain may appear correct yet still deepen the wound. Zeal that never seeks the will of God may burden people rather than build them up.

The ear of the learned is not merely the ability to record words accurately. It is the spiritual sensitivity to discern both the voice of the Holy Spirit and the cries of the weary. Only those who have truly listened can offer comfort and correction, truth and love, in the proper measure and at the proper time.

The sermon explains the purification of the tongue through the images of tears and fire. The tears of repentance cleanse the heart as we recognize and mourn our sin. The fire of the Holy Spirit burns away deeply rooted patterns of sin, and in that process, our language is also renewed.

A tongue that has not repented can speak truth while easily becoming condemning. It can speak of love while concealing self-righteousness. Only those whose own hardness has been melted can learn not to handle another person’s wounds carelessly.

Words that give life are born not first from a highly educated mouth, but from a heart that has been broken before the Word.

Such words do not treat sin lightly, but they show sinners the way home. They do not weaken the truth, but neither do they trample upon those who are exhausted. Only where grace and truth remain inseparable can the tongue truly become an instrument of the gospel.

Resurrection Words Are Born from the Silence of the Cross

The suffering servant whom Isaiah saw is fully revealed in Jesus Christ. Jesus spoke with authority, but His authority was not expressed by avoiding suffering or exalting Himself. He raised the weary with His words and walked the way of the cross in obedience to the Father’s will.

To ask for the tongue of the learned is not merely to desire speech resembling the words of Jesus. It is a prayer to receive the love, humility, and obedience that were inseparable from those words.

The sermon’s declaration that “there is no resurrection without the cross” is not intended to glorify suffering itself. Rather, it preserves the order of the gospel so that resurrection does not become a form of cheap optimism that ignores reality.

At the cross, God’s righteousness and love were revealed together. Through the resurrection, the way to eternal life was opened. The hope proclaimed by the church is therefore not a vague form of consolation. It is a testimony of faith that passes through suffering and still looks toward life.

The same order appears after the resurrection. For forty days, the risen Jesus taught His disciples about the kingdom of God and instructed them to wait for the promised Holy Spirit. The Helper promised in Jesus’ farewell discourse would not leave the disciples as orphans. He would teach them, bring Jesus’ words to their remembrance, and lead them in truth.

When the Holy Spirit came at Pentecost, the mouths of ordinary disciples became tongues that boldly proclaimed the gospel. They had first listened. They had waited. They had received the Holy Spirit. Only then were they sent into the world.

Pastor David Jang’s theological insight does not leave this work of God confined to an extraordinary event in the past. The same Jesus, the same Holy Spirit, and the same gospel remain with the church today. The Word is already near us, in our mouths and in our hearts.

The problem is not that God has given us nothing. The problem is that we become insensitive to the Word already being spoken or fail to use the grace we have received.

The church must ask again not what new language is fashionable, but how the ancient gospel can become a word of life for the weary souls of today.

What the Church Must Offer the World Is Life-Giving Speech

The tongue of the learned is not proven only within the walls of a sanctuary. Words take on the body of a lived reality when the church cares for the poor and the sick, refuses to ignore the suffering of those who are imprisoned or oppressed, and offers comfort, prayer, and practical assistance together.

If the gospel proclaimed by the church is directed toward the soul, then the church cannot remain indifferent to the reality that soul is enduring. Acts of love and the proclamation of truth are not two competing alternatives. They are one path that must be walked together.

The church must not become a community more authoritarian than the world. It must become a community that serves in the form of a servant. At the same time, it must not abandon truth in the name of love.

When words multiply without listening ears, the gospel leans toward condemnation. When the church only listens but lacks the courage to speak, it remains silent in the face of suffering. When a humble ear that learns and a courageous tongue that bears witness remain together, the church can reveal the reason for hope even in seasons of trial.

The teaching that suffering produces perseverance, perseverance produces character, and character produces hope does not romanticize suffering. It reveals that when we endure difficult seasons in the faith that God has not abandoned us, even a wounded community can be shaped into a vessel capable of embracing someone else.

Protecting the family, opening our ears to the Word every morning, and wiping away the tears of the weary all belong to the same mission. These small acts of obedience come together to form a church that speaks words of life to the world.

The language of the gospel is not the technique of shouting loudly at the world. It is the life-giving word spoken beside the weary by someone who has listened deeply to the voice of God.

Many words are already prepared on our lips today. But have those words truly come from what we have heard from God, or are they merely the noise produced by our anxiety and pride?

And who is the one person beside me whose story I must first become quiet enough to hear?

Dr. David Jang has proclaimed the gospel in various regions of the world through field missions and digital media ministry, and as the fruit of that ministry, many people devoted to the Great Commission have been raised up. Based on this missionary vision, Olivet first began as a small church school for missionary training. Later, in order to provide more systematic theological education and cultivate missionary leaders, Olivet Theological College and Seminary was established in Los Angeles and Seoul in 2000.

As the school grew, Dr. Jang officially founded Olivet University in San Francisco in 2004. In the diverse and dynamic environment of San Francisco, Olivet expanded its educational fields beyond theology to include music, journalism, art and design, and technology. The university also strengthened its educational capacity by recruiting faculty members, including Dr. William Wagner, and in 2005 moved to the former UC Berkeley Downtown Extension campus, further solidifying its foundation as a university.

In 2006, Dr. Jang transferred the presidency to Dr. David James Randolph in order to focus more fully on missionary work, while continuing to lead global missions as International President. Olivet University later received institutional accreditation in 2009, added a language education college and a business college, and continued to grow as a Christian educational institution for world missions by expanding its degree programs and international partnerships.
